The latest release from Los Angeles-based Autolux—the minimalist art-pop offering, Transit Transit—has been divisive to say the least. Detractors have derided it as icy and colorless; a dreary document devoid of the captivating post-shoegaze haze that made their debut such a delight. But where some see cold, disengaged aloofness, I see calm calculation and an inspiring precision (read our review of Transit Transit here). Each song unfolds patiently, their many electronic beeps, buzzes and hisses washing the stark soundscape in various swaths of white and gray. When Greg Andrews unleashes one of his shimmering, ecstatic guitar bursts, the resulting shift in color and tone is haunting and mesmerizing. If nothing else Transit Transit creates a world unto itself … nothing else sounds quite like it.
