It’s been a banner year for Atlanta music. For the past 10 months we’ve been barraged by an onslaught of terrific records in a wide variety of genres. And although technically From Exile’s mind-blowing prog-metal opus, Monolith, was released in December of last year, it’s taken most of this year for the ambitious record to catch on and for the group to get their live lineup situated. In fact, last Friday’s performance at the Goat Farm was the group’s first in nearly three years. I’m sorry I had to miss it, but by all accounts, it was a triumphant return.
But, really, Saturday night belongs to instrumental post/prog rockers, Sorry No Ferrari, who will be celebrating the release of their excellent first full-length, Ternary, due out next Tuesday, October 26th via Stickfigure Recordings and the Square Root of Music. What makes this band so exceptional is the way that they can steadfastly build to such swelling emotional peaks and then counter those pristine moments with an adrenaline rush of jarring, complex, mathy rock. For instrumental music, it’s remarkably memorable, littered with hooks and exuding a kind of cinematic quality that lifts you up and takes you places. Ternary is simply one of the best local releases of the year.
