The restless urgency of Titus Andronicus’ music and the sprawling anthems it produces have made for some of the rowdiest, most gloriously uproarious noise to be committed to wax in recent years. Despite their cynical and paranoid “us against them” themes, the mood always feels celebratory—a boozy, dizzying tribute to living in the moment, to fighting against the shackles of comfort and security. In this light, Patrick Stickles’ strained shouts are a cathartic call-to-arms, and the band’s thrash-and-burn riffs and ragged intensity appear brazenly triumphant. This is scream-along music that rages with angst and dashed dreams; that seethes with discontent and righteous indignation. It should be bleak and soul-crushing, but much like the great, like-minded bands that Titus Andronicus seeks to emulate—everything from the Replacements to the Pogues to the Clash—it’s inspiring and defiantly jubilant.
