ATL Concert Roundup — September 27-October 3

Rival Schools

THIS WEEK’S BEST BET:

Rival Schools
w/ The Gaslight Anthem, Fake Problems
Sunday, October 8
Masquerade – 695 North Avenue NE in Atlanta, GA 30308
Admission is $20 / Purchase Tickets

If I were being objective, Phantogram would have this spot on lock. (By the way, do not miss their show as it promises to be epic. You can find the details below.) But this week I’m allowing personal history to take the reigns of judgment. It’s not often anymore that I get to release my inner fanboy and Rival Schools front man Walter Schreifels is one of a few remaining artists that command my respect and admiration. I have very few man crushes. This is one of them.

In the late ’80s Schreifels was an integral part of the New York hardcore scene manning the guitar and/or bass for such genre-defining bands as Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today. But it wasn’t until Schreifels formed post-hardcore pioneers Quicksand in 1990 that he would really come into his own. Quicksand took the spirit and intensity of hardcore and stood the music on its head, eschewing the rapid fire pace and guttural screaming for metallic guitars, crushing grooves and Schreifels’ rhythmic, spitfire vocals. With the exception of Fugazi, no other band had as a transformative effect on my musical development as Quicksand did in the early ’90s. I credit them (along with many others, of course) for lifting me out of the cultural cesspool that was hair metal and mainstream rock and setting me on the path to punk. For that, I am forever grateful.

When Rival Schools disbanded in 2002 after just one split EP and a single full-length—the often thrilling, but uneven United By Fate—I thought it was the last we’d see of Schreifels as the raw and visceral front man. Although I respect his solo work, the laid-back singer-songwriter vibe doesn’t jive with me. Fierce, cathartic, emotionally intense—that’s how I’ve come to define him. But with a new album slated for 2011, the reunited Rival Schools are back and they’re dragging their driving guitars and infectious hooks along with them. Be sure to catch them opening for the Gaslight Anthem this Sunday. I’ll be the guy up in the front with both fists pumping in the air.
