I’m not really one for nostalgia. For dragging out the past. But some things just hit me in all the right places, in all the right ways. Abrasive yet melodic hardcore punk. Grimy, cutthroat guitars. Vocals strained to exhaustion. Shout-along choruses. I find that shit irresistible. And Atlanta’s Campaign has them in spades.
Check out their anthemic scorcher “Bored to Death” below. While the easy comparisons may leap out at you—Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike, that old-school No Idea sound—there’s no denying the group’s ragged energy and heart-on-sleeve intensity. Does it take me back? Absolutely. To $5 hardcore matinees, basement shows, and a thousand nights spent listening to records and drinking with my friends. I’m still trying to see the negative here.
My musical tastes have developed and expanded over the years. But I don’t think I could ever get tired of this. Many bands have talent, a few have vision. But rare is the band that delivers their music with such earnest, do-or-die spirit. Some things can be faked. Spirit isn’t one of them. And it will never get old.
If you like what you hear, I highly recommend you download Campaign’s latest EP, It Likes to Party Here, here. Their debut EP, H1N1, is available as well. All it will cost you is your time.
In addition, the band will be playing alongside the extremely awesome Young Livers (No Idea Records) tomorrow night at Beep Beep Gallery. Vegan Coke and Bad Mammals are also on the bill.
