Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, the Last to Sleep are an experimental electronic duo consisting of Balie Todd and Daniel Vose. Together they create glimmering, softly pulsing kaleidoscopes of sound—mood music, if you will—that manages to tie in fragments of trip-hop and trance, bits and pieces of gothic noise, piano ballads, world beat and clattering industrial music. There are vocals strewn throughout some of their tracks, including a phenomenally soulful guest turn from Lindsey Stamey of Knoxville’s, the Few, on a song called “Black Floods.” But it’s the purely instrumental stuff that has me consistently hitting the repeat button. Their densely-layered soundscapes are ghostly-lit and ethereal, full of broken, scattered beats, ambient textures and haunted field recordings that help lend the music a mesmerizing dreamlike atmosphere.
In October, the duo released their debut full-length, Night Falls Like a Freight Train, which is available for streaming/download via their Bandcamp page. You can check out the cover art and track list below. As for those souls not ready to commit their hard-earned cash, there is also a free download of a 3-song EP, 1000 Voices, available on the band’s website in exchange for a valid email address. But if I were, I’d just lay down the cash upfront for the full deal. Believe me, it’s worth every penny.
