There is a perception among many in the music industry that record labels are no longer necessary. With all the tools available via technology, the web and social media, bands have the ability to take charge of their own careers, book their own tours, promote their records, and generate a buzz for their music. While that my be true to a certain extent, it’s also a crock of shit. Well-run, established labels provide promotional and financial support that allow a band to focus more intently on their music—you know, the shit that actually matters—than on the laborious day-to-day PR grind it takes to get your name out into the world and get noticed. There is also the significant and oft-overlooked fact that good labels have their own built-in fanbase, dedicated followers and advocates who are loyal to their brand.
All of this makes Atlanta-based Royal Thunder’s signing with Relapse Records a bona fide boon for the band. I can’t imagine a better situation for the hard rocking trio. Not only does it buy them some measure of national credibility, but right off the bat they will get their self-titled debut EP re-released as they work on material for their debut full-length. That means there will be precious little downtime; the band can begin capitalizing almost immediately on their signing momentum. But most importantly, it grants them a shit ton of guaranteed listens. Relapse’s solid stable of artists—including Baroness, Coalesce, Black Tusk, and Cephalic Carnage—has won them a legion of fans. Their roster is closely watched by metal blogs, magazines and other media. Emerging artists will get their shot … even if it’s just a small one. Let’s hope Royal Thunder can make the best of it.
According to the press release, the band had the following to say regarding their signing:
Relapse makes it look easy, but they’re known for their work ethic and that’s right where we want to be.
