Authors Apology - Better Left There5. Authors Apology – Better Left There
Despite all the attached clichés, I ask you what better way for four young men to break away from the incessant grind of dead end jobs and the paranoid fears of growing old than to write music and play in a band together? It’s this spirit of restless escapism, the driving need to set aside our emotional and psychological baggage and make the best of what little time we have that forms the heart of Better Left There, the 8-song debut from Authors Apology. Even the explicit simplicity of the cover speaks to this. So it comes as no surprise that the music contained therein feels comfortable and familiar — earnest, no frills bar rock in the vein of such American working class heroes as Springsteen and Tom Petty. But it’s not all just hard luck tales and blue collar anthems with these guys, there’s also a distinct punk ethos that pulses through these songs, a disheveled, late night, whiskey and beer-soaked vibe that is reminiscent of the Replacements, the Hold Steady and, more recently, Titus Andronicus. Some records demand to be played at maximum volume. This is one of them.
