I can’t tell you how happy I am that Tristeza is still at it, casting themselves headlong towards year 14 and still crafting elegant, evocative music full of wonder and beauty. After just a few cursory listens, Paisajes, the post-rock trio’s latest effort released this past Tuesday, appears to be another gem—a sprawling, invigorating record that’s willing to take some chances.
Written in memory of their fallen friend, Carlos Dautt, “Cholo” closes out the album with fluid guitars weaving elliptical patterns around quietly shuffling drums and swelling keys. The accompanying video, a pulsing, sepia and grayscale-toned journey through abstract imagery, mountain landscapes and dusty Mexican border towns, provides the perfect visual compliment to the song’s oddly uplifting elegiac march. Enjoy.
