It would be extremely disingenuous for anyone to suggest that Venice is Sinking stole the spotlight from Oryx and Crake on Saturday night. But what was plainly evident was that ViS are a group of talented songwriters and veterans of the stage who are capable of putting on a highly-nuanced, emotionally-charged performance. While O+S were excellent, they do not yet have full command over their material. ViS, on the other hand, knows their stuff backwards and forwards, and it shows. I hesitate to use the word “professional,” that’s really not the connotation I’m looking for. I think “experienced” fits better.
In any case, check out the band as they deliver a beautifully understated version of “Compass” from their sophomore effort, AZAR, as well as their gorgeous take on Galaxie 500′s dream-pop classic, “Tugboat,” from their latest LP, Sand and Lines (click here for our review). As a bonus, you’ll almost feel like you were there as the insufferable crowd chatters loudly in the background. Here’s a news flash for Atlanta scenesters: you don’t get some sort of indie cred points just for showing up. Do you hear yourselves? Goddamn you’re obnoxious. You need to shut the fuck up or take your shitty, trivial conversations to the front bar where they belong.
