If you like your music loud and heavy, Black Cobra have you covered from just about every angle. The Bay Area duo can serve up monstrously thick slabs of doom and sludge as easily as they can spin off into a frenzied din of psychedelic drone. And if you’re the type that also enjoys speed and exhilarating displays of technical skill, then Jason Landrian and Rafael Martinez will also, on occasion, get your back. It’s this sort of versatility and ability to change gears that makes the band’s music so engaging and their live shows so unpredictable. Touring behind this year’s full-length effort, Invernal — the group’s sixth studio release and their most unified to date — Black Cobra is set to bring their epic lurch and thunderous squall to the Drunken Unicorn this Friday night. Opening the show is hometown sludge metal behemoths Zoroaster and Providence, Rhode Island-based experimental doom outfit the Body, so make sure to get there early. And don’t forget your earplugs.
