If you’ve ever come across Marnie Stern’s name, you’ve likely heard much about her stunning prowess on the six-string—the frenetic double finger-tapping, her jaw-dropping chops. But what often gets lost in translation is just how good and unique of a songwriter she is. Her music spans a wide gamut. There’s the obvious tips of the hat to metal shredding and the typical rhythms of math rock, as well as traces of spacey post-rock and bubblegum pop. On paper it doesn’t seem to make much sense, but part of Stern’s brilliance is her ability to take disparate sounds and channel her wild energy into crafting forward-thinking, emotionally-charged music that is surprisingly accessible.

For their part, Sacramento, California natives, Tera Melos, quietly released one of 2010′s best records. Patagonian Rats is a sonic collage of blistering math and noise rock, freeform jazz and abstract pop that’s somehow simultaneously pleasant and abrasive. Do not miss out!
