Brooklyn’s Sharon Van Etten has a voice that commands attention. It’s beauty is arresting—the sort of voice that seeks you out and seizes you. Her songs—usually minimalist acoustic folk-based affairs fleshed out by plodding drums, buzzing keys, pedal steel and Mellotron—are elegant and graceful, exuding a confessional intimacy that is by turns hopeful and heartbreaking. There are moments when she cuts loose and cranks up the volume and electricity, but, for me, her music works best when she keeps things spacious and atmospheric. With the amount of positive press she’s garnered over the past couple of years, you’d figure Van Etten would be playing more sizable venues, but I’m certainly not going to complain about the opportunity to see her again in a tight-knit space like 529. With so much talent at her disposal it won’t be long before the word spreads and the audiences begin to swell. I highly suggest you take the chance to see her up close and personal before the rest of the world catches on.
