Depending on your point of view, Thrice can be one of the most inventive bands performing today or one of the most exasperating. At times, the result of their work has been brilliant (The Artist and the Ambulance and Vheissu come to mind). At others, it’s been staid and lackluster (all four volumes of The Alchemy Index). But throughout the group’s 13-year existence, one constant has remained and that’s the band’s willingness to stretch out, explore and take risks. You can’t simply write them off as hardcore or emo or electronica or even rock, because the group has spanned all those genres and more over the course of their eight studio albums. But while pigeonholing Thrice may be impossible, I’d argue they do carry a definitive sound (or maybe it’s more of an aesthetic), even if you can’t quite put your finger on it. Whatever it is, you know it when you hear it.
The group’s latest effort, Major/Minor, is an aggressive guitar-driven effort punctuated by white-hot riffs and a career best vocal performance from frontman, Dustin Kensrue. It’s more focused and ferociously heavy than 2009’s uneven Beggars, and it stands out as potentially their most reflective and cathartic release to date. Truth be told, Thrice would be a highly recommended show based on their extensive back catalog alone. Throw in 11 new cuts — most of them stellar — and a ridiculous list of openers (including Atlanta’s own O’Brother, whose set will likely focus heavily on songs from their highly-anticipated upcoming record, Garden Window) and you’re left staring at a can’t-miss event. Be there.
