As we head in November with the holidays looming ahead, I’m starting to think about year-end lists. And I’m realizing that 2011 is a wide open race. So many smart, unique, dynamic local albums have surfaced this year and picking winners is going to be difficult. I”m even thinking of expanding the list this year in order to accommodate more artists and not leave any deserving albums in the dark. We’ll see.
One band that certainly made some strong strides last month was Lyonnais whose long-awaited debut, Want for Wish for Nowhere, finally saw a formal release. It’s a dark and complex listen, full of textured nuances and experimental twists and turns that ultimately lead to one of the year’s most mesmerizing local albums. As for this month’s most overlooked record, I’m going with the District Attorneys’ new five-song collection, Waiting on the Calm Down: The Basement Sessions, over Translee’s latest mixtape, Who’s Translee? Both are very good in their own right, but I’m giving the District Attorneys the edge because their record just kind of struck out of nowhere. Oh, and they’re both 100% certified free so if I were you I’d be doing a little Googling after you get through this post.
So what does November have in store? Plenty. At the top of the pile is a much-anticipated Atlas Sound record, as well as the official debut LP from local rhyme animal Señor Kaos. Also, if you’re a fan of extreme music or just someone who appreciates the technical wizardry of top-of-the-line shredding, don’t sleep on the new full-length from An Isle Ate Her. Shit destroys.
