Five ATL Releases to Listen for in February

2011 is off to a phenomenal start for Atlanta music. January saw several strong releases, some of them arriving unexpectedly from newcomers making their first waves in the local scene. If you haven’t done so yet, do yourself a favor and download the self-titled debut from experimental psych-pop duo, New Animal. Their epic 15-song LP really helped to kick 2011 off right and it set the bar high for all other bands to try and best this year. Not to be outdone, Mood Rings unleashed their own bit of hazy, blurred out pop-shoegaze magic in the form of the four-song Sweater Weather Forever EP. A week later and we got another ambitious debut full-length, this time from prog-folk outfit, Imagination Head, followed shortly by a wicked covers EP from Damon Moon and the Whispering Drifters. Incredible.

The reality is that Atlanta is incredibly vibrant right now and there is no telling when or where the next great record is going to come from. So as February approached I thought it might be a good idea to start keeping a list of upcoming local releases and put together a post highlighting those records that I felt were worth searching out. Below are five releases that I think a lot of us local music lovers will be talking about in the coming weeks. I’ll be doing this the first of every month so if you’re in a band and are putting something out this year, please hit me up and send me the details.

Campaign

Campaign - Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!Campaign – Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
Release Date: February 8
Label: Dick Party Records

Release Info:
The four-song EP will be released on a limited edition tape (100 copies) and vinyl. It will also hit the internet as a free download on the band’s website.

The Approach:

We hammered out most of these songs in between and right after our show/release cycle for It Likes to Party so we wanted to turn this out as quick as possible. In a way we sorta view Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! as an extension of It Likes to Party. These songs just came together really quick and all along the same time so we thought instead of saving them for a longer release just record them together and move on to the next thing. We are hoping to record again by the end of summer or early fall. Grindin’. — York

Jungol

Jungol - Who's in Bed?Jungol – “Who’s in Bed?” Single
Release Date: February 26
Label: Self-Released

Release Info:
“Who’s in Bed?” is the first single from Jungol’s new record due out later this year. It will be available as a free download from the band’s website.

From the band’s press release:

A new year means a new record for the guys in Jungol. They have just recently jumped back into the studio with the masterful Justin Mullinix, known for his work with local favorites Andre 3000, Stokeswood and Rehab. The new album will be a full-length release and is certainly taking a turn in a much darker direction from the last.

Jungol will celebrate the release of “Who’s in Bed?” on Saturday, February 26 at the Earl. Joining them will be Sun Domingo and the Influence. Doors are at 8:30pm. $8 gets you in.

HAWKS

HAWKS - RUBHAWKS – RUB
Release Date: February 28
Label: Trans Ruin Records

Release Info:
The only confirmation I have that RUB will be out on February 28th is on HAWKS’ Bandcamp page. Take that with a grain of salt, but the fact that there are three tracks from the LP available for streaming is a good sign.

Corner Kid

Corner Kid - Alas, At LastCorner Kid – Alas, at Last
Release Date: TBA
Label: Self-Released

Release Info:
I have it on good authority that this record is coming out this month, so I feel okay about including Corner Kid’s debut LP on this list. I could just push it off until I got more confirmation, but, frankly, Alas, at Last is just too damn good.
