MP3: A Fight to the Death – “Paper Airplanes”

A Fight to the Death

The first single from A Fight to the Death’s upcoming EP, Keep Warm, is a smoky, late night slow churner that feels dark, mysterious and suave all at the same time. It’s amazing what a simple organ melody, some scratchy guitar and warm, mellow vocals can do when strung together as seamlessly as these guys do it here. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that those verses lead so brilliantly into a huge hook of a chorus. But what really seals it for me is that quiet lull in the center; just around the time you think the song is fading out, the band slides in almost nonchalantly and just clobbers you with a soul-infused bridge that’s so classy and tasteful you almost dread it spilling back out to the chorus.

AFTTD is a group that continues to get better and better, stretching their musical boundaries even as they learn to cut out the fat and deliver only what’s essential in their songs. If you haven’t already jumped aboard the bandwagon now may be the time as these guys deserve all the attention they can get. I have some high expectations for Keep Warm and if the rest of the EP can live up to the promise of “Paper Airplanes,” I’ll be far from disappointed.
