I’m not yet sold on Austin Archer. It’s not a question of talent — all six songs on his upcoming EP, Venture to Breathe, are solid, well-constructed rock songs — but I can’t help feel that much of it sounds fabricated and formulaic. Still, his music holds promise. Something about first single “All In” (quite possibly it’s those melodic stabs of sharp guitars that are interspersed throughout the song) reminds me of Twothirthyeight and there’s a genuine earnestness here that is neither cloying or mawkish. In the end, it’s enough to earn a watchful ear. File this one under wait and see.
Venture to Breathe is out digitally on September 20th and on physical CD on October 1st via new local label, Get Up Records. Pre-orders are available now through his Bandcamp page.
Austin Archer will celebrate the release of Venture to Breathe on Saturday, October 1st at the Masquerade. Supporting him will be Gin House and Wire Method. Doors open at 7pm. $8 gets you in.
