MP3: Gun Party – “Nothing Like a Sheep to Make You Feel Like a Wolf”

Gun Party

Maybe it’s me, but Gun Party seems like some sort of art school experiment gone awesome. As you may or may not guess from the name, what we have here is some festive sounding art rock, infectiously fun and uninhibited, but, as the Gun portion implies, there’s also an element of risk and danger—not violence, mind you, or any sense of mean-spiritedness, but certainly an air of brazen unpredictability that keeps you on your toes. Gun Party know how to put on a good time, but I wouldn’t turn my back on them for too long.

The group is currently in the Living Room working on a new album due out by the end of the summer. “Nothing Like a Sheep to Make You Feel Like a Wolf” is the first track and it finds the band engaging in a hodgepodge mix of genre shuffling—jagged post-punk guitars, insistent rhythms, breathy vocals that linger somewhere between insidious and lascivious, all topped off with a bit of mischievous B-52s-style funk danceability. It’s a hell of an opener; one that leaves you hungry for what’s to come.

Gun Party - Nothing Like a Sheep to Make You Feel Like a Wolf

Gun Party is performing tomorrow night, July 1st, at the Drunken Unicorn. Also hitting the stage will be headliners the Booze along with Lucy Dreams and We the Lion. Doors open at 9pm. Entry is $5 for 21+ and $7 for 18-20.
