The 2011 Hijacking Music Festival is just over a month away and in order to get fans lathered up with anticipation, the fest has released a free compilation featuring a song from each artist scheduled to perform. Lurking in the middle of the mix is a new track from bombastic prog outfit ODIST, who have remained relatively quiet since successfully completing their Kickstarter campaign back in March, touring across the U.S. and recording their sophomore full-length with Ikey Owens of Free Moral Agents and the Mars Volta.

Whether or not “Pyramid Eyes” is a result of those Owens-led sessions, I can’t say, but the track certainly finds the band sounding razor sharp and focused with a slew of serpentine guitar lines that coil themselves tightly around drummer Sarah Wilson’s frantic beats. There’s more of a post-metal influence — think Russian Circles or Isis — than anything I’ve heard from them in the past, but the more aggressive approach suits them well. It’s dense, dramatic and utterly potent. For a group whose music is often about complexity of movement and dynamic shifts in mood and tone, this is an impressive leap forward.
