Over the weekend Nico Giarrano, the artist behind the dreamy bedroom pop of Places, released a new record called The Future, which at first listen sounds like anything but. Steeped in the gauzy haze of billowing synths, scattered percussion and vocals blown-out to the point of obscurity, the 11-song record swims through the rippled currents of an impressionistic ’80s reverie that’s warm and beguiling. It’s a murky, nostalgia-laden effort to be sure, but it remains (at least at first glance) exceedingly thoughtful and surprisingly versatile.
It’s still to early in my listening for me to be picking out favorites, but I can’t deny being drawn by the gentle swaying of “No More Lies,” an starry-eyed number that borrows as much from classic ’60s pop as it does from chillwave. Check it out below and then make sure to grab The Future for whatever your price choose over at Places’ Bandcamp page. Technically, that means you could get the entire record for free, but why wouldn’t want to be a cheapskate, now would you?
Places will be performing at the Real Criminal Records Benefit this Saturday night, November 19, at the Cottage. Other artists performing include headliners Reptar, along with Qurious, Nomen Novum, Small Reactions, New Animal and more. Doors open at 5pm. $5 gets you in. All proceeds go to help save Criminal Records.
