While continuing work on a proper full-length follow-up to last year’s Order From… EP, Athens/Atlanta-based quintet, the District Attorneys, decided to tide their fans over with a five-song collection of well-crafted demos entitled Waiting on the Calm Down: The Basement Sessions. It’s an excellent stopgap effort, one that showcases the band’s ability to write smart, engaging songs that borrow from a variety of sources: everything from folk and Americana to classic indie rock and reverb-soaked surf pop. And if you’re a fan of covers, there’s a lovely rendition of Gillian Welch’s “Wrecking Ball” that closes the EP.
My favorite track so far is the opening “California Fire,” an infectious earworm that strikes with shambling guitars and sunny harmonies. Check it out below and then head over the group’s Bandcamp page where you can grab the entire EP for free. Highly recommended.
The District Attorneys will perform this Friday, November 4 at the Masquerade in support of Glasgow rockers Three Blind Wolves. Local four-piece Swank Motel kickoff the show. Doors open at 7pm. $6 gets you in.
