“Water Story” originally appeared as part of a two-song digital 7-inch back in November of last year that served to introduce many of us to the Atlanta trio, Wowser Bowser. Now, a full year later, the song will get a more formal treatment as the opening track on the group’s debut LP, due out in January via the Stickfigure offshoot, Adair Park Recordings.
Although there’s something immediately accessible about the song’s billowing psych-pop core, it’s one of those tracks whose full impact doesn’t strike you until you’ve listened to it several times and all the layers begin to reveal themselves like so many curtains being drawn open. The production here is impressive — it’s lush and dreamy with warm organic textures nestled comfortably alongside abstract electronic flourishes. The group also wisely enlists the services of another local standout with Qurious vocalist Catherine Quesenberry lending an aura of spectral cool with her gorgeously breathy cadence. As local pop songs go, it’s as good as I’ve heard this year, and it’s an excellent introduction to a band that should make some bold leaps forward in 2012.
Wowser Bowser will be performing on Halloween night in support of the Drums at the Drunken Unicorn. Doors are at 8pm. Admission is $12 advance and $15 the day of the show. You can purchase tickets here.
