Is it me or did July just kind of come and go in a blur? Summer seems to be flying by, but luckily it’s leaving behind a trail of terrific records in its path. Last month brought us gems from established scene veterans Young Antiques, as a well as promising debuts from newcomers Brother Hawk and Supervisor of the Loveless Average. And while I’d like to say that, for the first time since I started writing this column, I managed to catch every release that I cared about before it dropped, there was the small matter of A.Grimes’ Sextape EP. If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s three tracks worth of maniacally awesome lo-fi art-pop-noise experimentation. You can download that sucker for free off their Bandcamp page right now. Like this very instant. Do it if you know what’s good for you.
For it’s part, August looks very solid, if a little front-loaded with releases. I’ll likely be adding to the records listed here in the coming days, but it’s only the second and already we have a pair of fantastic albums available — Featureless Ghosts‘ New Moods and Book Club’s Ghost — which just happen to exist on opposite ends of the musical spectrum. I keep hammering on this point every month, but in the ATL, it’s all about diversity. And this month’s crop of new records is no different; synth-pop, indie-folk, post-punk, rock, hardcore metal, experimental pop and soul — it’s all there for the listening if you take the time to seek it out. Here’s your guide.
