We’re barely on the threshold of July and already the 95+ degree days are upon us, saturating us in wave after wave of suffocating heat and sometimes stifling humidity. But despite the oven-like conditions, summer remains my favorite season if only for the promise of long days at the swimming pool, my annual pilgrimage to the Florida coast and, of course, the litany of summer jams that, perhaps more than anything else, will define the coming months — or at least provide the soundtrack.
One record that I’ll definitely be bumping from my car will be Eddie Meeks’ new joint, Cappuccino’s Unauthorized Records, which is far and away my overlooked album for June. Heavy on old-school funk, gritty beats and Meeks’ growly-voiced hard rhymes, I pushed this record into my playlist with literally zero expectations and it’s been on repeat ever since. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to listen to this cat spit, make sure to head over to his Bandcamp page where you can stream the record in its entirety.
As for July, here are seven records that should pique your interest. There are some established names on the list, as well as some fresh faces, but as per usual in this nest bed of musical creativity we call Atlanta, diversity wins the day. From experimental electronica to garage punk to hip hop to indie rock and blues, this month’s crop of fresh releases cover a lot of musical territory and should give just about every local music lover something to look into.
