I’ve never been a huge fan of Explosions in the the Sky’s recorded output, so it may seem disingenuous for me to say that tonight’s show at the Tabernacle is a must-see-hear event. After all, so many bands before and since EITS got their start have done their “thing” before, exploring the outer boundaries of loud/soft dynamics and shaping their crescendos and diminuendos into cathartic instrumental mood pieces with a cinematic bent. Words like “emotional” and “atmospheric” get tossed around so much as to render them virtually meaningless, but few bands’ music translate better to the stage than these guys’, who seem to possess an innate understanding of how to imbue their songs with a heightened sense of drama and tension. And, really, the Tabernacle is the ideal place to hear their music, where all those layered guitars have room to stretch out, to breathe and swell into quivering sparks of, yes, emotionally charged electricity. Don’t miss out.
