Much less heralded than its predecessor, Nine Types of Light is nonetheless another ambitious and, at times, exhilarating effort from TV On the Radio, not too mention their most emphatically optimistic recording to date. It may not be as outlandishly exploratory as previous efforts, but the ineffable sense of drama remains, couched in songs that are more patient to develop, if a little softer around the edges. The tragic loss of bassist Gerard Smith to lung concern changed the band irrevocably, but I suspect that much of their trademark livewire stage energy has remained intact. These guys know how to bring it. Forward-thinking Canadian collective Broken Social Scene open the show, so make sure to get there early.
