Speed, power and volume are the tools of the Big Business trade. And, Jesus Christ, did they put them to proper use at the Earl last Thursday night. But while a feverish intensity certainly played into their set, the group once again showed they have a definite knack for injecting their blistering swells of noisy sludge with melodic fragments that actually stick with you instead of fading away with the rest of the raucous din. For all their burly, primal aggression, the band’s music has always been clever and compact, with genuine hooks buried deep in all those frantic drums and pile driver guitars. And when it’s delivered with the kind of white-knuckle urgency they displayed at the Earl, you end up with staggering performances like this. Goddamn.
