VIDEO: Mood Rings – “Promise Me Eternity”

Funny how when this song first came out it made me think of summer sunsets and ocean breezes and all sorts of warm, lovely, beach-y things. But now that the weather has turned, it has me thinking of sitting by an open fire with a hot toddy in hand. And not in a Christmas time, Jack Frost nipping kind of way, but more as a nostalgic reflection on a fond memory. It’s impossible for me to listen to “Promise Me Eternity” (or most anything by Mood Rings, really) and not be lulled into by a pensive trance by all those hazy, reverbed-out guitars and dreamy vocals.

Directed and edited by Ryan Winsor, the band’s new video ties us into that sense of ruminative abstraction, offering us a series of images that plays out like some psychedelic dream sequence apparently triggered by the raising of the volume on a stereo. From there things get a little strange. There’s some sunlit woods where we encounter a mysteriously robed man and woman, and an odd bedroom scene involving a lot of smoke and some sort of cultish ceremony where the protagonist has his pendant stolen. You can make of it what you will, which I guess is the point, but I can’t deny that it all seems to suit the song’s wistful qualities perfectly. Enjoy.
