I wasn’t aware of the void left by mewithoutYou’s metamorphosis from a scathing post-hardcore act into an eclectic indie rock unit until I heard La Dispute’s Wildlife. Not that mewithoutYou had some sort of patent on a yelling/spoken word approach to melodic post-hardcore, mind you. It’s been done plenty. But both bands share an ability to mix textured music and poetic language in order to paint haunting portraits of doubt, guilt, bitterness and emotional distress. Much like mewithoutYou, La Dispute’s music is aggressive—it’s abrasive and visceral—but it’s also vibrant, thoughtful and, occasionally, beautiful. I’ve never had the opportunity to catch the group live, but if their onstage energy can match the intensity found on Wildlife, this should make for one hell of a potent show. Explosive Pennsylvania rockers Balance and Composure and Charleston, South Carolina natives All Get Out (who recently released their debut full-length, The Season, on local imprint Favorite Gentlemen) are set to open the show, so make sure to get to the Masquerade early for this one.
