Leave it to me to split town on one of the best live music weekends of the entire year. Not only is Atlanta getting its yearly bludgeoning courtesy of Nophest (now in its sixth year) and its non-stop four-day barrage of local music events, but there’s also some fantastic national acts stopping by the city this weekend (Fang Island!, Red Fang!). Sure I’m missing out on all of the fun to catch an honest-to-god-holy-shit-I-can’t-believe-this-is-happening Quicksand reunion show in New York, but, you know, still. In any case, if I have to choose a can’t-miss event from a week full of such stellar awesomeness, I’m going to go with Friday night’s Lightning Bolt performance at the Goat Farm. Loud, extreme and abrasive, the Providence, Rhode Island-based noise rock duo have never been afraid to jump off the deep end and explore every inch of their experimental leanings, but latter albums have seen them tone things down just a smidge in favor of some tried and true rock dynamics. Few bands can match the group’s speed and intensity, but as face-melting and mind-blowing as their live shows can be, it’s telling that they’re as much known for their party atmosphere as their ridiculous chops. This one should be special, kids. Don’t miss it.
