After listening to Cloud Nothings’ self-titled debut on Carpark and feeling unimpressed by Dylan Baldi’s catchy but ultimately pedestrian bedroom recordings, that last thing I could have expected was the rousing, feedback and distortion-drenched Attack on Memory. Baldi’s latest, Steve Albini-produced effort is a rough-around-the-edges lo-fi punk album that’s loud, dark and abrasive in all the right places. It’s a record filled with snarling guitars and battered hooks that harken back to the Jade Tree and Deep Elm glory years without sounding dated. On the contrary, what strikes one the most it the immediacy of the music—the songs just seem to reach out, grab you by the scruff of the collar and thrash you about without apology. It’s a lovely feeling this sort of visceral catharsis, and it’s hopefully one Baldi and his band will be able to engender this Friday night when they take the stage at the Earl. See you there.
