Fourteen ATL Records to Listen for in December

Irreversible - ThornIf there was one record that defined November on the local front for me, it was definitely the new Qurious LP, Void Vanishing—a gorgeously-crafted and mesmerizing slice of experimental electronic music that exceeded even my own lofty expectations. It’s a beguiling record that deserves considerably more attention—both here and elsewhere—because it’s quite simply a masterstroke of mood and celestial ambiance. Without question, it’s among the year’s best.

Looking forward through December, there is no shortage of potential gems lurking. Just this week, there is a half dozen records ready to spring forth and make their mark, including new works from such established artists as Gringo Star and the District Attorneys. Meanwhile, if there’s a theme that’s been established for the December 11th release week, it’s bands striving to build an early buzz for their upcoming 2013 recordings with Pillage & Plunder, Wolves and Fox Grin (aka Thom Chapman) all slated to release new singles in anticipation of their forthcoming LPs.

But every month always seems to have a record or two that promise to stand above the rest, and for December those records belong to atmospheric sludge masters Irreversible who are set to release a pair of EPs later this month. Of the two works, Thorn seems to be the more conventional with eight tracks of tar-thick riffs, ambient metal and experimental soundscapes ready to burrow into your brain. But if I had to choose which record I’m more excited about, it would have to be Plucked Up By the Root, a single 25-minute long piece of continuous music that, among other things, will feature guitar, lap steel and banjo work from Russ Abbott. That’s an immense and extremely challenging canvas to be working with; let’s see if Irreversible has the patience, the vision and the discipline to pull it off.
