Honestly, I can’t remember when or how I stumbled across Bear Girl Sr. I’m sure it was on Facebook, most likely through some other band’s post, so I really don’t have a whole lot of background information on the Duluth-based foursome. What I can tell you is that they have a nice selection of songs that they’ve uploaded to their Soundcloud page, all of which do an effective job of highlighting the group’s adventurous mix of progressive rock and reverb heavy psych-pop. Of the half dozen tracks available, my favorite so far is “Diamond Flavored,” a dense, meandering jam that leads you along with textural guitars and rock savvy vocals that somehow manage to invoke both Portugal. The Man and Circa Survive. The band still has some wrinkles to iron out (the abrupt ending feels like the band couldn’t decide where to go next so they just decided to pull the plug on the whole thing altogether) but what’s here is decidedly engaging, and there appears to be considerable room for growth.
