Do you hear that sound? That’s the sound of some serious BADASSERY at work. It’s the sort of sweltering psychedelic prog-rock storm that far too many bands attempt, but so few ever pull off. It’s what the Mars Volta SHOULD sound like or, more aptly put, what they would sound like if they cared more about writing actual songs and less about pummeling you senseless with FIFTY THOUSAND NOTES and reveling in the glory of their own manic excesses. On their debut single, “Baby Eyes (Brainsurf Babality),” Atlanta’s Brain appears willing to take similar chances with their music, but their risks are much more controlled as they frame their fantastic foray into psych rock, prog and surf music in a traditional rock and pop song structure. The result is a frenetic, high-energy scorcher that highlights the group’s strengths as individual players without sacrificing clarity, melody or any of the song’s killer grooves.
Featuring members of Gun Party and Jon Von Panther, the fivesome are yet another in the seemingly endless litany of local side projects and band offshoots, but judging from the amount of shows these guys are lining up to play, Brain is serious business. Make sure to download the single below and then head over to their Bandcamp page where you can grab both a live cut and a demo track for free.
Brain will be performing this Thursday night, February 9th at Star Bar. Sharing the stage with them will be Cassandras, And That is Why, Pillage & Plunder, Missile Command, Glen Iris and 000. Doors open at 9m. Admission is FREE.
