I’ve been sitting on this track for over a week now, waiting to post it until I had the opportunity to give it its proper due. From the first listen, I expected it was one of the better local singles of 2012, and repeated listens have only reinforced that initial hunch. Like much of the material on Imagination Head’s spellbinding sophomore effort On/Off, there’s a subtlety to “Sandcastle” that’s alluring; it’s a highly-nuanced layering of elegant instrumentation and hypnotic harmonies that billows out of your speakers like a cool breeze. The song’s psych-pop core isn’t built on big hooks or anthemic rock stylings, but there’s an accessibility and sense of familiarity that feels immediate. Overall, it has a coherence sounds that remarkably effortless; frontman and head songwriter J.R. Wicker displays a smooth efficiency that rewards patience and restraint over complexity and technical chops. Give it a listen below.
“Sandcastle” is the lead track from Imagination Head’s upcoming third album, Plastic Heart, scheduled for release on October 15.
