Experimental electronic duo Natural Selektion recently released their new record, Passage to Dreamland, and while I haven’t yet had an opportunity to delve into it deeply, a preliminary listen revealed more of the ambient, shape-shifting instrumental soundscapes the group has been churning out consistently since last year’s debut full-length, The Mana Machine. Once again DJs HaspPrecise and [SUB]URBAN combine to flood your ears in a deluge of sounds—textured post-rock, dramatic orchestral strings, bits and pieces of ethereal prog and funky jazz—all underlain by a steady flow of electronic beats that vary from old school hip hop to atmospheric electronica and trip-hop. My favorite track so far is the album’s fourth offering, “Precognition,” a song which manages to filter the duo’s wide-ranging appeal into an elegant and hypnotic five-minute package.
