MP3: New Animal – “Far Away”

New Animal

For the greater part of 2010 and 2011, New Animal was a beautiful machine, a tirelessly prolific songwriting marvel committed to burying us all in an avalanche of exquisite harmonies and billowing hooks. Just when you thought Kris Hermstad and Derek Burdette couldn’t improve on their ambient, beachside psyche-pop, the duo would reveal a new twist, some tiny spark of imaginative innovation that would somehow shed a new light on everything that came before it. It was a decidely impressive run, one in which the band could do very little wrong.

In 2012, however, the duo has considerably reduced their output, in part to focus greater attention on shows and building their reputation as live performers. In the process, they’ve acquired a full-time live drummer who has helped add a rhythmic anchor for the group’s blissed-out excursions. There was some question about how the introduction of a new voice might affect the duo’s music, but judging from their latest single—the moody, free-floating “Far Away”—New Animal remain as dreamy and mesmerizing as ever. It’s a track that washes you over in warm waves with shimmering synths and textural guitars combining to create a diffuse blanket of luminous sound. Give it a listen below.

“Far Away” is currently available for free, but it’s limited to only 100 downloads, so make sure to grab it now while you still can.
