I can’t think of a more overlooked local release last year than Sick Figures’ Two Ghosts. The album seemed to have a lot going for it—it was a record buoyed by dark wit and an air of accessibility that allowed the group to dig deep into a punk cabaret/vaudeville/saloon rock aesthetic without sounding pretentious or overbearing. The songwriting was inventive and there was plenty of spirited energy to drag the listener in. Why the record didn’t warrant more discussion among local music lovers, I’ll never know.
The group’s latest single, “Mad,” plays comfortably to the band’s strengths with a punkish ramshackle beat leading the way into what is ultimately a jangly, upbeat rocker. In comparison to what we’ve heard from previous singles, it’s fairly standard fare, but it’s still a solid effort with a strong hook. It’s also the fifth single to be released from Two Ghosts, which means at this point you can pretty much get half the record for free if you’re willing to do a little digging.
Two Ghosts is available now through Stickfigure Recordings.
