MP3: Spirits and the Melchizedek Children – “Land Tied”

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children

Recorded live at the Earl during the Atlanta Music Roundtable year-end show, “Land Tied” finds Spirits and the Melchizedek Children frontman Jason Elliott sounding wounded and alone, his sweet, aching melodies floating gently over the sparse strum of his electric guitar. I remember him performing the song that night — he had come out on his own to open SATMC’s set before the rest of the band joined him on stage to perform their extraordinary debut, We Are Here to Save YOU!, in its entirety — and being mesmerized by it’s haunting, spectral overtones. But listening to this recorded version is like a revelation. “Land Tied” is unabashedly emotional, but Elliott maintains a stately elegance throughout and there is nothing either tentative or unpolished about his performance. As a set opener, it was a brilliant segue into the sweeping grandeur of the band’s arty psych-gaze. As a leaked track, it affords us a promising glimpse into where the group is headed next. Either way, it’s one of the one of the most affecting songs of this young year.
