Local garage rockers Swank Motel recently released a five-song EP, four songs of which will be featured on their upcoming full-length, scheduled for release in late winter 2013. Recorded and mixed by Damon Moon, each of these tracks reverberate with a buzzing vitality and find their focus in melody and dynamics over the usual jittery garage rhythms. Overall, the sound is somewhat reminiscent of the Strokes, albeit with more youthful vigor and a slight psychedelic bent.
The EP’s final track, “Secret Underground,” finds the band at their most propulsive, unleashing a torrent of sprightly guitars and rollicking drums that find their apex in the song’s air-tight chorus. It may not be the most unique music out there, but it’s spunky and earnest, and, most importantly, it leaves considerable room for growth. Give it a listen below.
Swank Motel will perform on Monday, September 29 at 529 in support of the Masses and Wet Nurse. Doors open at 9pm. Admission is FREE.
