As the last leaves fall to the ground and winter’s chill finally begins to descend on Atlanta, it seems the perfect time for Tree Witch, aka Aaron Hendrickson of Nigredo, to unveil another of his icy ambient drone soundscapes. Much like his work on last year’s excellent Mintaka EP, “Laika” is cast from a bleak minimalist palette, one that invokes the stark barrenness of dead trees and desolate snowswept fields. His cinematic approach utilizes static noise and droning synths guitars that build and ebb into an unsettling expanse of sound. There’s a certain haunting beauty about the piece, and also a creeping sense of foreboding that suggests something darker lurking in the shadows.
“Laika” is part of a new two-song single that also includes a live take on an unreleased track called “122811.” Check it out below and the head over to Tree Witch’s Bandcamp page where you can download both songs for free.
