Somebody fetch me a bourbon and some cigarettes. And while you’re at it, dim the lights, will ya? This is music meant for the wee hours and dimly lit corridors in darkened clubs. It reeks of booze and smoke all sorts of late night lasciviousness. There’s a cooler than thou insouciance that permeates the track, but don’t take that to mean it’s cold or aloof. Rather, it just feels effortless. It may take a minute for “Wake Up” to hit it’s stride, but when that chorus comes around and that collision of gritty garage guitars and thumping electro happens in your gut, it’s a sexy, grimy, beautiful thing.
Reportedly, Vera Vera, whose lineup features Swank Motel guitarist/vocalist Jordan Parker, is currently working on their debut full length and will begin playing shows soon. In the meantime, head over to the group’s Bandcamp page where you can download “Wake Up” and its sister track, “Strangers,” for whatever price you choose.
