Goddamn, am I excited for a new All the Saints record. Maybe not five-year-old girl with a sack of puppies excited, but definitely STOKED. And even if Intro to Fractions sounds like the title of an album MATH4EVA would abandon his basement apartment to make, I doubt if you’ll hear many arpeggiated guitars or schizophrenic time changes when it comes out. What you will get, though, is more of the colossal guitar thunder and mind-bending space grooves the band has become known for. Bank on it. I’m not usually one to lay grand expectations at the feet of a single track, but the way “Half Red, Half Way” alternates between droning blasts of lumbering, fuzzed-out ferocity and pensive, textural majesty is exhilarating. Oh, and that tidal surge of psychedelic sludge that closes out the song? DIRTY.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been well over three years since All the Saints released the criminally overlooked Fire On Corridor X, but with Intro to Fractions due out January 30th via Souterrain Transmissions (Zola Jesus, Marnie Stern, CocoRosie), it appears the threesome are finally back in the game. There’s been no word yet about a release show, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s going to happen. Even if I have to get personally involved. Seriously. PERSONALLY. INVOLVED. (I have no idea what this means.)

As an added bonus, make sure to peep the official video for “Half Red, Half Way” below. It reminds me a little of Smashing Pumpkins’ video for “Cherub Rock,” in that they both take place in a forest and look like they were filmed for people on copious amounts of drugs. For nostalgia’s sake, I’ll give SP’s work a slight edge, just don’t stare at Billy’s shirt for too long because that monstrosity is HORRID. Still, this All the Saints joint is pretty good. It’s all psychedelic and shit like someone vomited a rainbow during editing and instead of starting from scratch they all said: “FUCK IT! LET’S POSTURIZE THIS BITCH!” Awesome.
