Coming off a hectic month that saw quite an impressive array of releases including a pair of sensational efforts from Hawks and Royal Thunder, it sort of feels nice to leisurely coast into June and settle into a “wait-and-see” mode. With the exception of Andy Hull’s (Manchester Orchestra) long-running solo project, Right Away, Great Captain!, which sees the release of the third and final installment of Hull’s epically sprawling folk tale on June 12th, there is nothing on this list that most would consider “highly-anticipated.” Still, there always remains the possibility of a dark horse emerging—whether it’s from the records shown here or from some artist yet to be revealed is anyone’s guess, but as any longtime reader of this column knows, there’s always a surprise lurking out there somewhere. (Last month’s hidden gem came courtesy of Atlanta emcee Eddie Meeks, who dropped yet another jewel with The Producer’s Best Friend Vol.1: The Alchemist Sessions). If I had to make a bet, though, I’d place my bet on New Terminus. A preliminary listen to the power pop quartet’s first full-length Red Giant, revealed an album rich with driving guitars and infectious melodies. Will it stand up to repeated listens? Let’s wait and see.
