Ever since post-hardcore quintet Native Suns released a pair of spacey, prog-leaning demo tracks back in May, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the announcement of a debut record and the release of a proper single. And while details on their forthcoming album may be scant—originally scheduled to drop in September, the record has been pushed back to an unknown date—we do at least have some further idea of what it will sound like as the band has unveiled a new single called “Insofar Gone.”
From the opening notes, the song ripples with stratospheric guitars and propulsive drums, weaving a web of textural and sonic layers that strike with sober intensity. It’s moody and dense, yet there is a melodic accessibility that feels welcoming, even despite the song’s dour atmosphere. But perhaps more importantly—especially given the widescreen tendencies shown here—is that the music never feels forced or contrived. There are plenty of opportunities for the band to drown in their own considerable ambition, but at each successive turn they prove themselves to be in confident command of the song’s direction and mood.
