The Hijacking Music Festival will be back for its third go around this December and in order to help spread the word, the organizers have compiled a free sampler highlighting all the artists scheduled to perform. Of the sampler’s nine tracks, one is a new jam from soul-infused alt-rockers the Sneaky Hand. Entitled “XOXO,” the song is said to be pulled from an upcoming EP, although I haven’t been able to track down any additional details corroborating that fact. But in any case, what we have here is as good a primer as you can get for the Sneaky Hand’s dynamic brand of off-kilter, slightly funky, somewhat prog rock ‘n roll. It’s a song that’s rooted in standard melody and hooks, but provides enough rhythmic left turns and stylistic deviations—everything from grungy riffs to neo-hippie psychedelia to fiery jam band solo excursions—to keep listeners guessing. The band has been content so far to make their name as an engaging and unpredictable live act, but “XOXO” hints at a group with enough pop vision and musical dexterity to take take it to another level. Give it a listen below.
