I feel like I slept on Dead Rabbits’ last EP, A Record to Break, and I’m sort of pissed about it. Every time I hear this duo lay waste to one of their down-and-dirty garage-blues jams I reminded about how much I love some real grit in my guitars and how a little soul goes a long way, especially in rock and roll. In watching the band’s livewire performance for indieATL, the obvious and unavoidable comparison is the Black Keys—the taut crunch and grimy pop sheen are both there, and there’s something about Dead Rabbits’ killer hooks and muscular riffs that feels delightfully raw and unhinged. It’s Thickfreakness by way of Hendrix by way of JEFF the Brotherhood, and I fucking love it.
