Having just made a bit of noise at this year’s CMJ Festival, Mood Rings recently teamed up with Converse to shoot this new video in a dilapidated building as part of the shoe king’s Ready, Set Get Lost series. In the past, I’ve alluded to the band’s strength as being their ability construct arresting songs out of simple structures that feel familiar. Listening to “Pathos y Lagrimas,” the first single from the group’s forthcoming debut full-length on Mexican Summer (Best Coast, the Fresh & Onlys, the Soft Pack), there is nothing inherently special about the song’s composition. But the band displays a remarkable gift for unveiling shoegazey textures and dreamy tones that drape the listener in a warm blanket of nocturnal sound. And while it’s not that far removed from the wistful sunlit jams that defined the group’s earlier releases—both approaches find their focus in hazy vocals and reverbed-out guitars—it’s impressive to see that Moods Rings is equally adept at conjuring enchanting late-night musings as they are compelling beach-side pop.
