VIDEO: Under White Pines – “Eskimo”

Under White Pines

When he’s not holding down the bottom end for Damon Moon and the Whispering Drifters, singer-songwriter Adam Laidlaw moonlights in his own solo folk project that goes by the name Under White Pines. For the past couple of years, it’s been mostly a one-man affair but after recording his first full-length last month, Laidlaw saw the necessity for expanding his project into a full band. In just a few short weeks, he’s manged to recruit an impressive supporting cast that features Damon Moon as well as two members of Sleepy Genes. Not bad indeed.

Late last week, Laidlaw released a homemade video for “Eskimo,” a track from his upcoming album. It’s yet another nostalgia-laden, home movie-pilfering production, which has seemingly become the go-to aesthetic of choice for bands making videos on a zero budget. But here it works, mostly because Laidlaw’s plaintive, bare bones folk carries with it a dusty, gray-toned remembrance of memories past. On their own the cycle of images would likely generate little emotional effect, but back it with a song so full of grit and homespun charm and the results are quite lovely. Give it a watch below.

Under White PInes will perform Friday, June 29 at the Cottage. Also performing are Faun and the Pan Flute and Lily and the Tigers who will be celebrating the release of their new album, Hiding ’til Dawn. Doors open at 9pm. Admission is $5.
